Medellín sits at 1,500 metres in the Aburrá Valley, Colombia, with a year-round spring climate that averages 22°C / 72°F. The city has been named one of the world’s most innovative cities by the Wall Street Journal and the Urban Land Institute, and it has built a serious medical infrastructure over the past two decades, including several internationally accredited hospitals and a deep bench of orthopedic specialists.
Direct flights connect Medellín with most major U.S. cities (Miami, Houston, Atlanta, New York), and major Canadian hubs via one connection. Further flights from the Caribbean are similarly connected.
El Poblado, the neighbourhood where you’ll stay and recover, is a quiet, residential district with cafés and park. Your Patient Journey Director is permanently based in Medellín and on the ground throughout your stay.
Your accommodation is selected with your knee recovery in mind. Options include premium apartments and serviced suites in El Poblado, all within a short drive of your clinic and your physiotherapist. We pre-walk every accommodation for orthopedic suitability: elevator access, single-floor layouts, accessible bathrooms, and proximity to flat-walking routes for early-recovery mobility.
Your spouse or travel companion stays with you for the full duration of your stay, including the night of your surgery. There is no gap in their comfort while you’re at the hospital.
After your introductory call, we’ll send you a curated list of accommodations matched to your mobility needs, budget, and recovery timeline.
Knee replacement surgery (also called knee arthroplasty) removes damaged bone and cartilage from the knee joint and replaces it with an artificial implant made of metal and medical-grade plastic.
It is one of the most frequently performed and well-studied orthopedic procedures in the world, with success rates consistently above 95% at accredited centers.
The procedure is recommended for patients with severe knee arthritis, significant joint damage, or chronic pain that has not responded to non-surgical treatment.
Your final surgical plan, including implant choice (Smith & Nephew, Zimmer Biomet, or Stryker, depending on your anatomy) and surgical approach, is confirmed by your surgeon at the in-person pre-op consultation in Medellín.
Persistent knee pain that limits daily activities such as walking, climbing stairs, or standing
Symptoms that have not improved with medication, physiotherapy, or injections
X-ray or MRI evidence of significant joint deterioration or cartilage loss
We coordinate your accommodation with your recovery needs in mind. Options include premium hotels, serviced apartments, and in-patient recovery centers, all positioned close to your clinic for easy access.
After your introductory call, we’ll send you a curated list of accommodation options suited to your mobility level, budget, and recovery timeline.
If you require extended nursing support or physiotherapy beyond the included package, we coordinate those services at additional cost, clearly outlined before you commit to anything.

Yes. Colombia’s leading orthopedic clinics operate at standards comparable to top US and European institutions. Many facilities hold international accreditations and use the same implants, equipment, and surgical protocols used globally. Your MedValet coordinator will provide full documentation of your surgeon’s credentials and clinic standards before you travel.
We recommend 15–18 days for most patients. Surgery typically occurs on Day 3, with assisted mobility beginning on Day 4. Medical clearance to fly is generally granted between Days 15 and 16, subject to your recovery progress. Your surgeon makes this determination, not us.
The surgical package includes 30-day medical complication insurance. Your surgeon provides 1-month post-operative follow-up via WhatsApp, and MedValet coordinates any additional care needed. We remain available throughout your recovery and continue communication after your return home.
Bilateral (simultaneous) knee replacement is performed in select cases. Your surgeon will advise on this after reviewing your imaging and overall health at the pre-operative consultation. If staged replacement is recommended, MedValet will plan your second journey once you have recovered from the first.
MedValet’s coordination fee is USD $1,500. This covers case coordination and clinical communication, pre-travel planning, personal welcome in Medellín, all transportation during your stay, and accompaniment on pre-operative and surgery days. The surgical package (COP 29,000,000 / approx. USD $8,000) is paid directly to the clinic and surgeon. There are no hidden fees.
If you’ve been told you need knee replacement surgery and are exploring your options, the next step is simple: contact us, share your situation, and we’ll tell you honestly whether Medellín is the right fit for you.
No pressure. No commitment. Just clarity.
The introductory 30-minute call is complimentary and includes a written summary of next steps within 48 hours.
